What are thyroid nodules?
Thyroid nodules are abnormal growths on the thyroid gland — solid or fluid-filled, one or many. Most people with thyroid nodules don’t experience symptoms. When symptoms are present, they can include:
- Hoarseness or changes in your voice
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
- Pain in the front of your neck
- An enlarged thyroid (goiter)
Cancer is rare in thyroid nodules, but it can occur — which is why any nodule should be evaluated by a specialist. The exact cause isn’t fully understood, though being overweight or obese, smoking, and certain medications (birth control pills, statins) are associated with higher risk.
What to expect during the procedure
1. Numbing
A numbing injection reduces sensation in the treatment area — most of the discomfort of the whole procedure comes from this step alone.
2. Treatment
Dr. Kazeem places the ablation probe into the nodule. The device delivers high-frequency waves that heat and shrink the abnormal tissue — you may hear mild popping sounds. Takes 15 minutes to an hour.
3. Recovery
A short monitoring period, then most patients resume daily activities right away. Plan for a 2–3 hour total appointment, and consider having someone drive you home the first time.
Other treatment options
Watchful waiting
Small, asymptomatic nodules can sometimes be monitored with periodic check-ins rather than treated immediately.
Radioactive iodine
The thyroid absorbs the iodine, causing the nodule to shrink over time and symptoms to ease.
Surgery
Still the right option for large nodules, or when there’s concern about cancer risk.
